Artwork

James K-M’s abstract, geometric, and metaphysical works often explore the juxtaposition of ancient and contemporary elements, using a variety of materials such as skulls, plywood, ABS pipe and MDF blocks for his sculptures and paintings.

Before returning to analogue painting and sculpture, he was involved in digital art as a recognized digital artist and curator. In addition to presenting at ISEA international conferences, he co-founded the Digitalis Digital Art Society and curated digital print exhibitions in the Vancouver New Forms Festival.

While on Salt Spring, he has participated in group exhibitions, including notable events like the Havana Biennial, Re:Location, the Salt Spring Arts Spring Art Show and Provocation.

Sacred Irony

K-M’s paintings often reference primordial languages and ancient structures. This theme is explored through his series “Cave Paintings” and the “Pyramids” series, which infer temples and ancient buildings, blending the ancient with the contemporary.

He deliberately juxtaposes ancient and contemporary elements by using industrial materials to create what he has called “a sacred irony”, as seen in his ABS sculptures that were inspired by Aztec forms.

Although his work implies metaphysical and esoteric significance, it is not symbolic or directly ritualistic.

His exploration of the metaphysics of privacy and identity in the digital age in the recent 2024 Provocations Exhibition questions the pervasive nature of technology and the metaphysical concerns it raises.

Exhibitions

James K-M shows new work as well as showing pieces from earlier series. For example, many of the Pyramids have not yet been shown, as each one is built specifically for exhibition. Other earlier works still to be shown come from the ABS series, as well as the Doorkeepers, Painted Skulls, and numerous floor pieces, along with the Cave Paintings plywood works.
